Types of Dementia (from NHS Clinical Knowledge Summaries)

The most common causes of dementia are (quote):

  • Alzheimer’s disease (about 50%)
  • Vascular dementia (about 25%).
  • Dementia with Lewy bodies (about 15%).
  • Frontotemporal dementia (less than 5%).
  • Mixed dementias (included in the above estimates).

Mixed dementias include Alzheimer’s disease with vascular dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease with dementia with Lewy bodies.

All other causes make up less than 5% of the total.
