Abstract
This is an interactive online educational resource (in .pdf format) designed by NHS Education for Scotland. It is intended for staff working in Acute Care environments and aims to help identify and care for patients suffering with dementia.
Hospitals are often disorienting and frightening for persons with dementia, as people with this condition are more readily challenged by any change in their routine or environment. The resulting stress too often results in physical and / or mental deterioration. It is therefore of vital importance for staff working in acute care to have the requisite insight and understanding regarding the needs of the person with dementia. This well-structured and engaging learning resource consists of five main sections:
- Coming into the ward.
- Recognising and assessing care needs.
- The care experience.
- Meeting the needs of the person who is distressed.
- Leaving the ward: transition.
There are clickable “key point” summary pages in each section, plus appendices and references. Highly recommended. Well worth a look.
