This Women’s Royal Voluntary Service (WRVS) research examines a range of indicators including health, wealth and levels of loneliness in four countries (the UK, Germany, Netherlands and Sweden). The UK was rated as falling in third position in terms of overall performance. This report makes recommendations including:
- Higher rates of volunteering.
- Annual government reports on Britain’s older population, benchmarking progress against other EU countries.
- Confronting age discrimination in the UK.
- Exploring and encouraging “intergenerational mingling”.
Ageing across Europe: report prepared by DEMOS for WRVS. Cardiff: Women’s Royal Voluntary Service (WRVS), May 2012.
Note: In 2013 the WRVS (formerly the Women’s Royal Voluntary Service) dropped the “W” to mark their 75th anniversary.
