Summary
This online map of dementia prevalence and diagnosis rates was produced originally by Alzheimer’s Society and Alzheimer Scotland in collaboration with the Tesco 2011 Charity of the Year Partnership (“Building a better future for people with dementia”). The map has been updated in January 2013 to reflect the latest Quality Outcomes Framework (QOF) figures.
Click here to view the online map. There remains a wide variation between areas; for example only 31.6% of people with dementia in the East Riding of Yorkshire receive a diagnosis while 75.4% in Islington are diagnosed.
“The proportion of people with dementia who have a formal diagnosis is now 46%, compared with 43% in 2011. Alzheimer’s Society estimates that there are 428,000 people in the UK who are living with dementia but haven’t been diagnosed”.
The interactive map allows people to investigate the number of people with a diagnosis of dementia in different Primary Care Trusts, simply by zooming in on each area and clicking for details. For example:
- Birmingham East and North PCT: 46% of people with dementia are diagnosed.
- Dudley PCT: 40% of people with dementia are diagnosed.
- Heart Of Birmingham Teaching PCT: 49% of people with dementia are diagnosed.
- Sandwell PCT: 53% of people with dementia are diagnosed.

- Walsall Teaching PCT: 36% of people with dementia are diagnosed.
- Warwickshire PCT: 43% of people with dementia are diagnosed.
