Mental health problems amongst the elderly in acute hospitals include dementia (31% of all older people in hospitals) and delirium (estimated in this report as 20% of all older people in hospitals). Outcomes for patients in hospitals with these cognitive impairments are worse than for other older hospitalised persons generally; this is a matter of ongoing concern and is addressed on numerous levels by this report.
