The Human Genome Project transformed genetics; now may be the time to do something similar for brain research. US President Barack Obama has announced a research initiative to map the brain, funded with an initial $100m investment. It is hoped to clarify how the brain works and offer more understanding of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease.
The project is entitled “Brain Research Through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies” (BRAIN). The project will involve both public and private-sector scientific organisations.
About 80 European research institutions are to be involved in the parallel Human Brain Project, at an estimated to cost of more than 1bn euros.
