An online interface, called Stethoscope, has been created which makes it possible to view the performance of hospitals against five quality domains:
- Mortality rates.
- Quality of life.
- Patient experience.
- Patient safety.
Some people will see the Stethoscope tool as being a rival service to Dr Foster. This new free online interface will be updated quarterly. It allows the reader to investigate measures against the five to eight indicators making up each domain.
The indicator data is all taken from information in the public domain and has been gathered together using disparate sources. Data sources include NHS Choices, certain hospitals, the Health and Social Care Information Centre and NHS England.
“Stethoscope is an evolved version of the NHS East Midlands Quality Observatory’s Acute Trust Quality Dashboard, developed by Methods Consultancy”.
Stethoscope aims to provide comprehensive and easy to interpret summaries of approximately 50 indicators of hospital performance and quality within the five domains, reflected by finely graded colours (instead of a more crude green, amber and red traffic light scheme).
