The Commons Science and Technology Committee has called for an independent inquiry to check the safety of donor blood arising from the hidden risk of infection from variant CJD (the human form of “mad cow disease”).
A recent study revealed one in 2,000 Britons could be carrying variant CJD. While many of the people infected may never develop symptoms, due to the long latency period of the condition, they could spread the infection to other people via blood or medical instruments.
