Draft Guidance on Nurse Staffing Levels (BBC News / NICE)

Summary

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has released draft guidance indicating to hospital managers that there is a higher risk of harm to patients when the ratio of nurses to patients falls below a certain level; around one per eight patients.

Some flexibility may be required, depending on the categories of patients for example, so NICE has not stipulated the one to eight ratio as a fixed and absolute minimum. Hospitals in England should be concerned when nurses each have to care for more than eight patients on wards during the day. Research by the National Nursing Research Unit has found previously that half of hospitals regularly have wards with less than one nurse for every eight patients.
