Bilingualism, Even if Acquired in Adulthood, Beneficial for Brain Ageing (BBC News / Annals of Neurology / Behavioural Neurology)

Summary

Further research from the Centre for Cognitive Ageing and Cognitive Epidemiology at the University of Edinburgh has investigated the apparent link between bilingualism and improvements in the rate of cognitive decline. Their latest research indicates that learning a second language – even if it is taken up in adulthood – has a positive effect on the brain. Reading, verbal fluency and intelligence appear to be improved. Further research is planned.
