Nudge: Increasing Awareness of the Cost of Missed NHS Appointments (BBC News / Department of Health)

Summary

Over 12 million doctors’ appointments are missed each year in the NHS. Missed appointments are estimated to cost taxpayers £160 million annually. In future, patients missing appointments will be informed how much their appointment(s) actually cost the NHS.

Note: There are no plans to introduce charges for patients who miss GP appointments. The aim (at present) is simply to encourage citizens to take greater personal responsibility for how they use NHS resources.
